Welcome

Greetings fellow Gammans! I am thrilled to be serving as the current National President of our esteemed honorary. I have been a member of Eta Sigma Gamma since I was an undergraduate student at Central Michigan University and have continued my membership for over 15 years. I am also currently the chapter sponsor for Iota Chapter at the University of Toledo where we have over 20 active members. Eta Sigma Gamma is an organization that is very near and dear to my heart because of the wonderful friends I have made and the skills I have obtained while being active in this organization. Eta Sigma Gamma is firmly grounded in the tenets of teaching, service and research. These are all important dimensions for all professionally trained health educators. Your chapter sponsor and other professional members of our organizations can also be wonderful resources for you as you travel down your professional journey. Access these mentors often and develop meaningful relationships that can be life- long and beneficial for you.

I hope you find this academic year to be challenging and rewarding. I would like to extend two pieces of professional advice for you as you become a member of Eta Sigma Gamma. First, leave your comfort zone. While this may seem awkward at first, it is often when we journey to new places and try new things that we truly grow and develop. Second, get involved early on.  I regularly tell my students that getting a college degree is 40 percent of what you learn in the classroom and 60 percent of what you personally do in terms of volunteering and service related activities. Please continue to create outside opportunities to build your professional foundation and skills. In Eta Sigma Gamma, you have a wonderful vehicle to become professionally active, to network and develop your resume. Seize these opportunities and you will get out of it what you put into it.  I look forward to interacting with many of you and I hope to see you in San Antonio in Fall 2012. In closing, please follow me on Twitter at ESGPresident for important ESG and health related information.
Warmly,
Dr. Amy Thompson
National President
